Cinque Terre – The 5 Lands
(June 2012) On Monday, we set off for Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heriage site just beyond the border of Tuscany in Liguria. We will do some walking, a train ride, and a boat ride.
Cinque Terre is a national park and, although it’s recent popularity focuses on the picturesque fishing villages, the real stars are the unbelievably impressive terraced hillsides created by the hard labor and will to survive of its inhabitants.
We are dropped off to begin our stroll through Manarola. From there we walk along the coastline on the famous Via dell’Amore (the street of love). We are in awe of the rugged coastline and sheer beauty…From the next town, Riomaggiore, we take the train to the western-most village of Monterosso where we explore and have a little lunch. Here we catch the ferry and, as we head to Portovenere (not part of the 5 Terre), we can admire each village from the sea.
