The Teatro del Bicentenario in León, Guanajuato will present its first opera production of the 2015 season starting on the 15th of March, The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini. The opera is considered to be one of the most representative operas of the comic opera genre, full of humor and mischief in a score with some of the most famous and virtuosic passages of the operatic repertoire such as: the famous "Largo al factotum" aria, "Una voce poco fa", "The Calunnia è un Venticello" and "Ecco, ridente in cielo."

With a production inspired by the steampunk aesthetic, this opera, which is comprised of two acts, is inspired by the comedy Le Barbier de Seville ou La inutile précaution, part of the famous Beaumarchais trilogy. In the opera, Count Almaviva woos the beautiful Rosina and, with the help of the witty Figaro, the "barbiere di Siviglia” plans to outwit Don Bartolo, the jealous guardian of his beloved. The plot is truly a comedy of errors in which the absurd, cunning and love are the main ingredients.

In the upcoming performances the role of Figaro will be played by the young baritone Josué Cerón; the Italian tenor Matteo Macchioni will make his opera debut in Mexico in the role of Count Almaviva; and the mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz will play the role of Rosina.

The Italian tenor Matteo Macchioni hails from Sassuolo, Italy. He is a rising star and has sung the role of Count Almaviva in other productions, including most recently at the opera house in Genoa, the “Carlo Felice”.

When I lived in León, Guanajuato, I really enjoyed the professional productions of the Teatro del Bicentenario and it looks like this one will be no exception. I am sorry that I will miss it!
