Grignolino wine – a great find in Torino
When I was in Italy recently I had the good fortune to try a bottle of Grignolino D’Asti wine at lunch with my friend Matteo. The wine complemented the cheese dish that I had just perfectly. It was a beautiful, fresh and sunny day in the romantic city of Torino and we sat in a charming little outdoor café. On such a nice day, it was easy to see why this light, yet surprisingly complex red wine is popular in the region.
After I had such a good experience with the wine at lunch, I decided to go the next day to a cute little wine shop that near the hotel I was staying at in the Centro Storico in the heart of downtown Torino. The proprietor of the shop had two types of Grignolino D’Asti and recommended one of them in particular. I decided to take my chances and try to take a bottle home with me to help me relive my Italian experience and I am happy to report that the bottle made it home unscathed. I am looking forward to it.

"Grignolino is a red Italian wine grape variety commonly grown in the Piedmont region. It makes light colored wines and rosés with very fruity aromas, strong acidity and tannins. The name Grignolino derives from the word grignole which means "many pips" in the local Piedmontese dialect of the Asti region. The abundance of pips, or seeds, contribute to the strong, bitter tannins associated with the wine. Modern winemakers try to avoid the excess tannins with gentle and slow pressings. G rignolino has two Denominazione di origine controllata (DOCs) that produce wine from it – Asti and Monferrato Casale."
