November has no mercy in #Pompeii
A friend who knows of my interest in Pompeii sent me the link to an article about the latest round of damage that has occurred there. Even with all of the focus on the restoration, nature still manages to complicate the human efforts.
Here is my English translation of an excerpt of the article from IlSole24Ore: http://mobile.ilsole24ore.com/sole24orem/post/99?pagina=1&url=ABf3oZf
November has no mercy in Pompeii. There was no mercy three years ago when the Schola Armatorum collapsed , just as scarcely three weeks ago a portion of the wall in house number 21 came down , and even now there is no mercy as another piece of old stucco shattered on the Casa del Torello di Bronzo (House of the Bronze Torello or young bull) and a huge gash formed in the wall of the Central Baths.
All of these calamities are the fault of the heavy rains that typically occur in the penultimate month of the year; copious downpours in the hinterland of Vesuvius, creating a crisis situation for the already overburdened drainage systems of the archaeological sites. Recent crises have affected the Casa del Torello di Bronzo ( Regio V , Insula 1 , Number 3 , 6,7,9 ) , one of the largest houses in Pompeii has among other things a unique system of utilization and distribution of drinking water and the Central Baths , the largest spa complex within the archaeological area which covers an entire insula. Both buildings face each other and are located at the beginning of the Via di Nola at the corner of the crossroads of Orpheus. A caretaker raised the alarm about the current damage during the normal patrol.
Ci sentiamo presto, Lina
