Italy claimed third place at the Confederations Cup soccer tournament with a 4 to 2 penalty shootout victory against Uruguay on Sunday June 30th at Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador. Both Italy and Uruguay had strong teams that played fiercely during the tournament and could easily have ended up in the final instead of the 3rd/4th place game.

The game was tied at 2:2 before the penalties. The two goals for Italy were scored by Davide Astori and Alessandro Diamanti. Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon also contributed to the success during the penalty phase. Of particular note is that he stopped Diego Forlan’s penalty kick.
